Libros de Artista

La exposición Libros de artista está conformada por una importante muestra de volúmenes elaborados a mano en el Estado de California, Estados Unidos de América. Se trata de la obra de grandes maestros impresores que han renovado de manera protagónica la producción artesanal de libros de calidad.

Estos libros excepcionales fueron presentados recientemente en el evento “The Art of the Book in California. Five Contemporary Presses”, celebrado en el Centro de Artes Visuales Iris & B. Gerald Cantor de la Universidad de Stanford. El proyecto fue curado por Robert Bringhurst y Peter Rutledge Koch (Presidente de The Codex Foundation).

Acompañando la muestra californiana, se exhiben algunos bellos libros de artista realizados por impresores mexicanos. Conforman un abanico de opciones y manifiestan la riqueza de posibilidades en la capacitación de nuevas generaciones de impresores, artistas gráficos, diseñadores y escritores que habrán de encontrar en este legado una rica tradición a partir de la cual proponer realizaciones originales. La preparación de la muestra estuvo a cargo de Isaac Masri, Julieta Sarfati y Fernando Ondarza.

Para la impresión de este libro catálogo de la exposición “Libros de artista” se empleó el tipo Espinosa Nova, creado por Cristóbal Henestrosa en el año 2010 por Estudio –CH, México D.F. El diseño tipográfico está basado en los tipos originales creados por Antonio Espinosa y empleados en el libro de Alonso de la Vera Cruz, Recognitio Symmularum (1554). Estos fueron los primeros tipos romanos cortados e impresos en el Nuevo Mundo.

The Artist’s Books exhibition is an important selection of handcrafted volumes from the state of California, United States of America. These books feature the work of master printers who have played a leading role in renewing the artisanal production of quality books.

These exceptional books were recently presented at the event “The Art of the Book in California: Five Contemporary Presses,” held at the Iris & B. Gerald Cantor Center for the Visual Arts at Stanford University. The project was curated by Robert Bringhurst and Peter Rutledge Koch (President of The Codex Foundation).

Accompanying the California exhibition are several beautiful artist’s books produced by Mexican printers. They represent a range of options and demonstrate the wealth of possibilities for training new generations of printers, graphic artists, designers, and writers who will find in this legacy a rich tradition from which to propose original works. The exhibition was curated by Isaac Masri, Julieta Sarfati, and Fernando Ondarza.

This catalog book for the exhibition “Artist’s Books” was printed using the Espinosa Nova typeface, created by Cristóbal Henestrosa in 2010 by Estudio –CH, Mexico City. The typographic design is based on the original typefaces created by Antonio Espinosa and used in Alonso de la Vera Cruz’s book, Recognitio Symmularum (1554). These were the first Roman typefaces cut and printed in the New World.
