Research Scholarship

The CODEX Foundation and the College Book Art Association are pleased to announce:
A travel scholarship for a non-exhibitor who is a student or recent graduate to attend the CODEX IX International Biennial Book Art Fair & Symposium.

BASIC INFO

This $2000 scholarship supports a student or recent alum (within 2 years of graduation from a BA, BFA, MFA, or similar focused program of study) to attend and fully participate in the CODEX IX International Biennial Book Art Fair & Symposium this February 4-7, 2024. The applicant should have a focused artistic or scholarly emphasis in the book arts. Applicants must be members of CBAA to apply.

The fair is one of the largest of its kind with over 200 tables of individuals representing their own artists' books and fine press books which highlight a range of approaches to the handmade limited edition book. Also present are a variety of craftspeople working in the field of book arts, as well as numerous book art organizations and tool and supply vendors. The symposium offers inspiring keynote presentations and talks by artists giving deeper insight into the work they are exhibiting at the fair. The CODEX Foundation is looking for applicants that want to be immersed in the full experience and community of the entire event. The scholarship funds must be used to attend the fair, symposium, and gala dinner. The recipient is also encouraged to participate in some of the numerous book arts related exhibitions and events that take place surrounding the main events.

Applicants will use $300 of the award to register for a symposium ticket (which includes a multi-day ticket to the fair). They must also register for the gala dinner event, $80. The rest should be used for lodging, airfare/travel, and/or the funds should go towards a project that results from their participation in the fair & symposium. Although we prioritize applicants coming from farther away to assist with travel and lodging — if the applicant is not coming from farther afield, please indicate how any excess funds will be used in a constructive way towards your current project(s) and towards building your career in the field. We will give special consideration to applications from under-represented communities in the book arts field, but any and all interested parties are encouraged to apply.

The CODEX Foundation will work with the recipient to help them feel welcome and a part of the event. If the recipient would like to volunteer as a way of immersing themselves further in our community and in the fair & symposium organization, they would be welcome, however it is not a requirement and will only be discussed after the recipient has been selected.

*If you have already signed up for the Symposium, you can still apply!
