Possibilities: When Artists’ Books Were Young :: Kathleen Walkup, curator

Exhibition dates: February 11 - May 1, 2022

Possibilities: When Artists’ Books Were Young focuses on the genesis of artists’ books as examined through the lenses of gender and inclusion. By highlighting the critical role that women, including women of color, played in the definition, development and curation of artists’ books and exploring the challenges of inclusion and diversity, Possibilities works to re-focus our understanding of the time when artists’ books were coming into their own. Exhibited items include rarely seen exhibition catalogues and posters from early artists’ books shows as well as trailblazing works by creators from the 1970s through the 1990s.

How Is It A Book? Book Art Review and A New Model for Criticism

Thursday, April 14th, 6:00–8:00 pm; presentation begins at 6:30 pm

Books have long been recognized as a key medium for artists. In today’s climate the book form is leveraged to share ideas, perspectives, outrage, protest, humor, and beauty. At this in person event, Book Art Review editor Megan N. Liberty will introduce the theme of the first issue, "A New Manifesto for Book Art Criticism," and discuss some of the successes and challenges of encouraging new writers—new to criticism or new to book art—to answer the question, how is it a book?, one of the founding principles of BAR's approach to artists' book criticism.

Registration is required. Please click here to register.

BOUND: The Art of the Book

What is the essential nature of a book? Is it the words printed on a sheet of paper, is it the story told within its pages, is it the comfort of leather binding and parchment end papers, or is it…something else entirely?

Some say the book is an endangered species in this modern era of the internet and digital natives, others swear the allure of the printed page will never be extinguished. We believe that beyond both these statements, a book is both art and artifact: a multi-sensory treasure to be consumed not just with the mind, but also with the hands and the heart.
