We will be updating this web site with more information -- including Podcasts of the Symposium preceedings and news of the catalog -- as it becomes available. In the mean time, please contact us if you have photos of the book fair that we may use in a photo gallery page.

The Codex Foundation recently produced the first biennial Codex Book Fair which was accompanied by a Symposium entitled: The Fate of the Art, The Hand Printed Book in the 21st Century. The Book Fair and Symposium took place February 12, 13, 14, & 15, 2007 on the campus of the University of California, Berkeley.

The inaugural fair gathered together a congress of the world’s finest private presses, book artists, artisans, curators, collectors, and scholars in the spirit of an Old West rendezvous. The symposium and book fair provided an opportunity to see and be seen in a relaxed setting; a chance for all to admire the current work of a truly international group of book artists and artisans. The fair itself featured hand-press printers and fine art presses and included booksellers, bookbinders, papermakers, bibliophile organizations, and educational programs in the book arts.

This first symposium and book fair was dedicated to the overlapping fields of fine press and artists’ books; future symposia, events, and publications will explore a great variety of topics related to the mission of the Foundation. We have chosen the San Francisco Bay Area for our debut events, and plans are also being formed and proposals are being entertained to convene on other topics and in other locations around the world.

This turned out to be a historic “bookweek,” a grand success, and an exciting inauguration!
